  • Pentagon attackers stole 'amazing amount' of sensitive data - A network intrusion at the Pentagon nine months ago resulted in the theft of an "amazing amount of data" that continues to pose a threat to national security, the CIO of the Defense Department said earlier this week.

  • Government: We Can Search All Laptops - Another reason you should use strong encryption for all data! - A couple of years ago, Michael T. Arnold landed at the Los Angeles International Airport after a 20-hour flight from the Philippines. He had his laptop with him, and a customs officer took a look at what was on his hard drive. Clicking on folders called "Kodak pictures" and "Kodak memories", the officer found child pornography. The search was not unusual: the government contends that it is perfectly free to inspect every laptop that enters the country, whether or not there is anything suspicious about the computer or its owner. Rummaging through a computers hard drive, the government says, is no different than looking through a suitcase. One federal appeals court has agreed, and a second seems ready to follow suit.

  • Facebook Is Always Watching You - Amid heightened concerns surrounding Facebook's new advertising platform, the social networking site has given users a new reason not to trust it: Researchers recently busted the company for tracking users activities on external sites, even after they logged out of Facebook.

  • The War on the Unexpected - This month's issue of Bruce Schneier's Crypto-Gram newsletter features a very interesting article on perceived terror threats, scare-mongering, trivial events being escalated into major terror threats and a War on the Unexpected. Crypto-Gram is always worth subscribing to, but this issue makes a very interesting, and spot-on (in my view) read.

  • Surveillance 'is a threat to UK' - The UK is in danger of becoming a "surveillance society ruled by the technology and the politics of fear", the Liberal Democrats have warned. Home affairs spokesman Nick Clegg said the government saw "no limits" to the use of technology for spying on people. The party's annual conference in Brighton voted to repeal the ID Cards Act and for the destruction of DNA samples taken from "innocent" people.

  • Qubits poised to reveal our secrets - It might seem like an esoteric achievement of interest to only a handful of computer scientists, but the advent of quantum computers that can run a routine called Shor's algorithm could have profound consequences. It means the most dangerous threat posed by quantum computing - the ability to break the codes that protect our banking, business and e-commerce data - is now a step nearer reality.
